Few degrees in the nation prepare you so well to prepare taxes. The Graduate Tax Program is a one-year master's degree program leading to the Master of Taxation (M.T.) degree. For students who have a law degree, a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Taxation is also available. The program is all tax, with class work based directly on the Internal Revenue Code and Treasury regulations. Forty-five quarter hours are required for the master's degree (equivalent to 30 semester hours). Full-time students take three to four quarters to complete the program.
The program is housed at the DU College of Law. Because it is a joint M.T. and LL.M. program, accountants and lawyers attend the same classes. This is excellent preparation for tax accountants, who are expected to be proficient with legal materials such as the Internal Revenue Code, Treasury regulations and pertinent legal cases and rulings.
One of the finest programs of its kindThe Graduate Tax Program is one of the oldest and largest master's programs in the United States for tax study, and it is also one of the best. Every year a four-person team of graduate tax students competes in the national tax challenge (now the Deloitte Tax Case Study Competition), where students test their tax knowledge against teams from other schools. In the 13 years the Tax Challenge has been in existence, the Graduate Tax Program team has placed first in the nation five times, second four times, and third once. No other school even comes close to that record.
The program's excellent reputation carries our graduates far – our placement rate is virtually 100 percent. The Big Four accounting firms and selected local firms recruit on campus each October, and students who participate get job offers long before the fall quarter grades are posted. Graduates of the program work as tax consultants in accounting and law firms, manage corporate tax departments, work for the IRS or enter private practice.
