International Students – English Language Requirements

An official score report for the TOEFL or IELTS must be submitted by an applicant whose native language is not English. Please review the section below titled English Language Requirements for further information regarding these requirements and potential exceptions. When requesting official TOEFL scores, please refer to institutional code 4842 and department code 02.

  • All Daniels students are expected to read, write, and speak English fluently. International students must demonstrate a proficiency in the English language by taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the IELTS.
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) – A minimum score of 570 (paper based), 230 (computer based), or 88 (Internet based) is required for admission consideration.
  • IELTS - A score of 6.5 or higher is required to be considered for admission consideration.
  • Applicants with a regionally accredited bachelor's degree from a U.S. institution and/or whose native language is English may be exempt from the TOEFL/IELTS requirement.
  • English Conditional Acceptance (ECA): Applicants who do not meet this level of English proficiency may be considered for conditional acceptance if all other admission criteria are met. Prior to enrolling in any graduate-level course work, ECA requires a placement evaluation by the DU English Language Center (ELC) and successful completion of intensive ELC English courses up to and including the Graduate Preparation Program.
  • All international students whose native language is not English are encouraged to enroll in the University of Denver's reputable English language Graduate Preparation Program (GPP) , one quarter prior to the start of graduate study. The GPP program is not required, but is strongly recommended since the program is designed to help ensure your success in the graduate business program. Students who complete GPP will not be required to participate in language skill evaluations during International Student Pre-Orientation.
